Who really benefits from Organic Cotton?
Organic Certification Our cotton is certified by the internationally recognised Dutch body, Skal. The farms we use are inspected regularly and granted an annual certification licence on this basis. We are grateful for the work that Skal do to verify that the cotton we use is organic.
Health Benefits For the farmer and their family, the health benefits of going organic are undeniable. In addition there may also be health benefits for you as the consumer, for as much as 20 per cent of the weight of conventionally produced cotton top can be chemicals, and these carcinogenic chemicals can leave residues on the skin.
Pesticide Use Conventional cotton is perhaps the most intensely sprayed mass production crop in the world. Growing conventional cotton involves the indiscriminate spraying - both on the ground and from the air - of chemical toxins to eliminate insects, control weeds and strip the plants of leaves for harvesting.
All It takes is about one pound of chemicals to produce a top using conventional cotton.
Besides killing pests - which eventually become immune to the chemicals - pesticides are toxic to an array of beneficial wildlife, including fish, birds, bees, crustaceans, and aquatic organisms. The poison is passed along the food chain.
Environmentally Friendly Dyes Any dying process has some impact on the environment. However, we use dyes which are free of azos, (which are known carcinogens).
We do not use chlorine bleach, heavy metals or formaldehyde in any of our processes and our dyes perform just as well as other less environmentally sensitive dyes.
We use a ‘high exhaustion’ dying process, which means that the take up of the dye is very good, so the waste water is far cleaner. In addition we also minimise the amount of salt used during the dying process, which in turn has a corrosive impact on the environment.
